1) Title tags, metadescription, and headers:
Not getting too terribly technical here, but the on page SEO is a great place to start with your local SEO efforts. First, you will need to do some keyword research and find out what the local consumers are searching for the most to optimize your website properly. Lets say you are a plumber, and after doing your research you find that most local consumers looking for a plumber in you area are typing into google "plumber Atlanta" or "plumbing repair Atlanta". Once you have this nailed down, you will need to add these keywords into the title tag of your home page of the website. This can generally be found in the SEO settings of your site, or sometimes is just called the Title of the website. By putting in these keywords, you are properly optimizing the title for google, bing, or yahoo to know what you are looking to show up for in searches. Make sense? You are trying to trigger the search engines to notice your site for these typed in keywords so that they display your site at the top and this is the first step.
Next, is the metadescription which is what displays underneath your website on the search. Here you want to write a compelling call to action such as "Call Atlanta Plumbing Co for all of your plumbing repair, service and installation needs today! We service all of the metro Atlanta area and are family owned and operated" So, it doesn't need to be too long, as only a certain amount of characters will show up. Make it unique and a quick call to action!
The headers on your website home page, service pages and other pages are important as well. Google, the largest search engine looks for bold words on the page to help with the ranking process. With your paragraph header you will want to follow suit with placing the keyword in there as well, so one of your headers may read "The best plumber in Atlanta Georgia" if we are keeping with this plumber example. This is another driving factor in what the search engines will scoop up in their robotic searches called algorithms.
2) On page Content:
This part is crucial to being ranked high in the search engines especially for very competitive niches such as plumbing, heating and air, electrical, roofing, etc. You want up to 1,000 words of purely unique content on your home page so that google, yahoo, and bing know what your site is about. It goes hand in hand with the title tag, and metadiscription of your site, so you will want to use the same keywords three to five times on your home page to really trigger those phrases even more. Write naturally, no need for spammy content just trying to say "plumber Atlanta" or "plumbing repair Atlanta" over and over again. You can write flowing content and work those words and phrases in naturally. Also, VERY IMPORTANT, never copy and paste content on your website from another site you have found. Google and the search engines are very smart and will detect duplicate content quickly. This will get your website slapped and put in the time out box until it is corrected. Usually it will end up so far down the search results that no one will ever see your website. So, make sure you get unique content on there, no plagiarized material. I know this may sound like a lot of work, but hire someone to write the articles if you don't feel like doing it.
3) Back-links and off page SEO:
We are down to the last and one of the most important factors to getting your website search engine optimized. Back-links are simply a clickable link to your website from another website. So if you are reading a website and you see a bold sentence or word that you can click on, that clickable link will take you to another website. You need very important and high authority websites that link back to your website to have a high search ranking in most cases. These back-links coincide with the keywords that are mentioned above for "plumber Atlanta" and similar ones. The clickable links need to be "plumber Atlanta" that links back to your website so that Google and other search engines know what to rank you for. These back-links to your website increase the popularity and authority of your site over your competitors since the web is mainly a popularity contest. Google thinks that since a particular site has more links coming back to it, that it must be the best in its space and doing something right. You want good links back to your site from reputable and high authority sources for best results. Spammy websites linking back to your site will do your rankings no good, and deteriorate the trust and authority of your site, so be careful. We run all websites through our SEO tool to ensure that the link is high quality for that very reason.
To summarize, search engine optimization is comprised of three big components and all three are equally important. One without the other will lead to inconsistent signals to the search engines and keep your site at the lower end of search results. These tasks and activities can be done and learned, but most business owners we work with just don't have the time or resources to do all the things necessary to get fantastic results. Of course we can handle all of this for you so that you get terrific rankings and leads from your website.
